Optimization of Fertilizer Application Rate for Green Roof Systems

Objective: Determine the optimal fertilizer rate to promote Sedum growth and survival during production and after installation

Description: Although a standard rate of fertilizer (5g N/m2) has been recommended by FLL (2008), other research groups worldwide have used a wide range of fertilizer rates (0gN/m2 to 23.8gN/m2) for green roof studies (Rowe et al, 2006, Retzlaff et al, 2008). In addition, fertilizer requirements for plants during production have scarcely been reported, especially in northern climates. An initial plot was established at the University of Guelph (Fall 2011) to evaluate the response of Sedum plants to a range of fertilizer application rates. Sedum plants will be evaluated for growth and survival characteristics.
