Determining Optimal Growing Substrate pH for Sedum Plants

Objective: To evaluate the growth responses of common Sedum species to growing substrate pH, in order to recommend optimal substrate pH for green roof systems.

Description: Plant nutrition is import in producing healthy green roof plants, and ensuring plant survival after installation. In addition to the lack of general knowledge of green roof plant fertility requirements, more specific topics, such as the influence of substrate pH on plant growth, remains unexamined especially for species such as Sedum. Soil pH affects nutrient availability and ultimately plant performance. Five commonly-used Sedum species were grown in a green roof substrate ranging in pH levels. Plant performance was evaluated to determine the optimal substrate pH for these species.
